There is one voice that we ran out of time to include, but he’ll be on next week. His name is Malik Washington and he became a journalist while imprisoned in Texas. Now he’s moved to San Francisco to become the new editor of the San Francisco Bay View, National Black Newspaper. The Bay View has a website, sfbayview.com, but it also prints a real newspaper once a month and mails bundles of it to prisons all over the US. The paper is a lifeline to prisoners and it publishes prison voices. Malik Washington is on parole, living in a Geo Group re-entry facility which has had an outbreak of COVID-19, but he has not been granted early release, even though he has a job, a home to go to, and a weekly guest spot on KPFA’s Flashpoints Radio. For more on Malik, see the Bay View website, sfbayview.com, and tune in next week to hear him on “COVID, Race, and Democracy.”
